Away v Meadow Sports
Sunday 4th December 2011
An early start and a chilly December morning awaited us on our visit to Meadow Sports for a third consecutive away match. The squad was pretty much full strength and the boys were keen to get back to winning ways after two defeats.
Woking started brightly with two early chances to take the lead both being denied by good goalkeeping. Woking had the greater part of the possession with Charlie W and Sidarth making sure that nothing got past them at the back leaving Alistair between the posts as much of a spectator as the supporters on the sidelines! A mazy run by Joseph and the introduction of Charlie B to support James up front saw more chances created but Meadow Sports remained resolute in defence. Just as the game looked like heading for a goalless first half, an attack by Woking broke down and they were caught on the break by Meadow Sports who attacked down the right and a good pass to the unmarked centre forward brought the opening goal which was well taken but totally against the run of play.
The boys attacked again from the re-start but there was little time for them to get back into the match before the referee’s whistle ended the first half.
Following some encouragement from the coaches and the ever popular half time oranges, the boys took to the field for the second half with Zak taking over in goal. The second half started as the first had ended with Woking looking to get forward. A good through ball found Charlie B in space and a great shot beat the keeper to bring Woking back on level terms with minutes of the restart. Woking continued to press with James and Jake both finding themselves in good positions. William B and Sidarth ensured that any Meadow attacks were swiftly dealt with before they got close to troubling Zak at the back.
The boys sensed victory and created some good opportunities with William C coming close with a shot that was heading for the corner being turned around the post by the keeper. Charlie B also had a great effort cannon back off the underside of the crossbar, sorry Charlie no goal line technology for Under 7s! A second goal for Woking was proving elusive until Alistair picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and struck a sweetly hit shot that flew out of the goalkeeper’s reach into the top corner of the net. Definitely a contender for the December goal of the month competition!
Meadow Sports took the restart but there was little time for them to mount an attack before the final whistle blew signalling a well deserved 2-1 win for Woking Town.
The boys played really well with everyone making a contribution, Charlie W, Sidarth and William B ensured that the Woking goal was rarely threatened and well taken goals from Charlie B and Alistair secured the victory. For his wonder strike in closing minutes Alistair was named this week’s player of the match.
