What a game - I thoroughly enjoyed what was probably our best performance of the season!
Match Report Sunday 29th April 2012
Sunbury FC V Woking Town Under 8’s
The Town faced quite possibly their most difficult away fixture of the season so far against Sunbury - finding the venue and having to raise their game against first division opposition in the worst weather conditions of the campaign so far.
Having narrowly lost their previous match despite leading 2-0, the boys were determined to bounce back and went on the attack straight away from the kick off.
Wokinghad three unanswered shots on goal before a tremendous tackle led to their first corner. Good defending from Sunbury temporarily relieved the pressure and allowed them to venture intoWoking’s half for the first time although a long clearance allowed the Town to force three consecutive corners.
A determined defence held firm and Sunbury gradually came into the game winning two corners of their own. However, Woking comfortably dealt with Sunbury’s attempts and a good clearance allowedWokingto break away with three consecutive chances on goal.
The Town enjoyed the majority of the possession for the next few minutes although they were confined to the centre of the park as both teams took a breather from the hectic action. GoodWokingpressure was eventually rewarded when their top scorer collected the ball on the right and drove an unstoppable shot into the top left of the Sunbury goal – increasing an impressive tally to 23 goals in just 21 games.
The hosts upped the anti andWokinghad to be at their best to deal with the pressure and were slightly lucky when Sunbury’s first proper effort ended just wide of the post.
It was breathless end to end football as both teams continued to attack and force a series of corners. The half time whistle allowed the boys a well earned rest and an important team talk that reinforced their confidence to go on and win the game.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first with the ball covering virtually every blade of grass on the increasingly muddy pitch. Both teams coped well with the worsening conditions and the crowd witnessed some terrific football with some slick passing and movement. Neither side had the luxury of substitutes although this didn’t stop the tough committed though fair tackling that was evident throughout the game.
Sunbury had a great chance to equalise mid-way through the second half although the shot was fired wide andWokingheld on to their lead.
Sunbury’s keeper was much the busier and several saves and last ditch tackles kept them in the game and theWokingattack at bay.
The final whistle was met with relief by the players and parents alike and Woking were delighted to have recorded a 1-0 victory against first division opposition leaving them hopeful of promotion to the top flight next season.
Well done boys – a fantastic achievement!
